Great Southern Bioblitz 2021 Whakaraupō
October 11, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Great Southern Bioblitz 2021 Whakaraupō welcomes you over Labour Weekend
Discover what wild things inhabit the Southern Hemisphere in 2021 for the second-ever Great Southern BioBlitz!
The ‘Great Southern BioBlitz’, or ‘GSB’ for short, is an international activity of intense biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species across the Southern Hemisphere in Spring. #GSB21 will be held from Friday the 22nd of October until the end of Monday on the 25th of October, incorporating different communities, areas and regions across the Southern Hemisphere.
The purpose of this event is to highlight both the immense biodiversity spread across the Southern Hemisphere in the flourishing springtime, as well as to engage the greater public in science and nature learning.
By the end of October, the natural world is on full throttle. Flowers are blooming, insects are emerging, birds are singing, and reptiles are coming out of their winter hibernation. It just makes sense for us to record observations of life at this time of year.
In Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour the event is being curated by Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbour. The Bioblitz utilises the iNaturalist app, so anyone with a mobile phone and the downloaded app can help out with the count. iNaturalist is a valuable tool that will connect all local observations in one geographical area over the Bioblitz period.
Whaka-Ora are running three free ‘How to use iNaturalist’ workshops to help locals for the bioblitz.
Lyttelton – Monday 4 October from 5pm to 6pm at Mt Herbert Community Board Boardroom 25 Canterbury Street, Lyttelton,
Governors Bay – Monday 4 October from 7pm-8pm Governors Bay Community Centre, 1 Cresswell Avenue,
Diamond Harbour Monday October 11, 7pm to 8pm Green Room of the Community Hall, 91 Waipapa Avenue, Diamond Harbour.
Just turn up, but please wear a mask. Due to potential Covid-19 restrictions at this time, we may need to limit numbers at each venue.
