SIR RUSSELL COUTTS TO ATTEND REGATTA AT CHARTERIS BAY YACHT CLUB
Five times Americas cup winner Sir Russell Coutts will be supplying coaching expertise on the water for the Open Bic regatta to be held at Charteris Bay Yacht Club from the 9th-10th of December.
Sir Russell Coutts has championed the new class of children’s yacht in his retirement from his successful career in both Olympic sailing and Americas Cup racing. Coutts is considered one of the world’s most successful sailors and has an impressive list of achievements on and off the water.
Coutts has led the development of the Open Bic class of yacht in New Zealand and has dedicated his time to attending events around New Zealand to promote the idea to clubs and young sailors. The Open Bic fleet is rapidly expanding with well over 700 boats in Australasia.
“The Open Bic is a fantastic boat for young sailors to experience the joy of sailing. It is fast, exciting and fun to sail yet simple to rig and maintain. Many of the skills learnt in the Bic will be easily transferred to other boats as sailors evolve and progress onto other forms of sailing,” said Sir Russell Coutts.
Charteris Bay Yacht club Commodore Mike Pearson says, “It is a privilege to have a sailor of Sir Russell’s caliber coaching this regatta and putting his passion into sailing at a grass roots level. The Open Bic class is a fantastic new initiative that is promoting sailing in all its diverse forms while getting young sailors into the sport and keeping them for life.”
Sir Russell Coutts will be in attendance at The Charteris Bay Yacht Club 293-295 Marine Drive, Charteris Bay 8971, Canterbury on Both the Saturday the 9th and Sunday 10th December from 9.00am to 1.00pm.
