Laurenson Park, Diamond Harbour
Te Ahu Patiki/Mt Herbert Community Garden Group is seeking a lease over Laurenson Park at 123 Marine Drive, Diamond Harbour, to develop a community garden for the benefit of residents in the wider Purau to Teddington area.
Rarely have I seen anyone playing or using this park, so it would be nice to try it as a community garden. It has easy access and good visibility to deter undesirable behaviour/. This did occur when we had a community garden in Purau. I saw someone who felt they would like to see it planted as a native walkway. This I feel would be a waste as we already have lots of lovely natives planted in our gullies close to hand, but there is no community garden. A community garden would help with Community fellowship, and be useful to help non-gardeners learn how to grow food for themselves. It is also the way of the future with food grown locally being the best environmental outcome. Fruit trees, sweet chestnut & walnut trees or even a mulberry tree may also have a place in an area of this size which would be lovely, as most people do not have room to grow these in their own backyard.
