Pilgrimage with Paul for Men

February 11 @ 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

Port Levy to Little Akaloa

Sunday Feb 11, 8:30am to late afternoon

We begin at 8:30am with cooked breakfast at Port Levy, probably at the Port Levy Community Centre on Western Valley Rd

9:15am Drive to the end of the road just past the marae and the wharf, where the gospel was first preached to tangata whenua by tangata whenua in 1850s.

9:15 Stage one: drive up to Starvation Gully Rd.

10am morning tea before we begin to tramp.

Walk down to Menzies Bay (4.5 km downhill ~ 1 hr).

Lunch midday in a patch of bush in the shade along the way.

Stage two: To Decanter Bay 6m (largely flat 6km ~ 2 hrs).

Stage three: Decanter Bay to Little Akaloa (1 hr) where the local church was famously built and decorated by Menzies after the pattern and tutelage of local Maori.

Days end: Early BBQ dinner 5pm.

Total walking time will be about 5 hours, along back country road and tracks… mostly in open country. We aim to set aside most of Sunday. We will have roving vehicles to pick people up along the way if required. Mobile phone coverage is limited.

Paul Askin will be providing input along the way, as a pilgrim guide. It will be possible to make the pilgrimage by car, for those unable to walk long distances: Paul’s “sessions” will be accessible from the road!

You can find your own rhythm and pace… this is not a race… The plan is to cater with koha contributions for food and petrol.
